Devotional Reading - February 6, 2026

Good morning, Beloved, 

John 13:4-8 - [4] So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, [5] and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him. [6] When Jesus came to Simon Peter, Peter said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?” [7] Jesus replied, “You don’t understand now what I am doing, but someday you will.” [8] “No,” Peter protested, “you will never ever wash my feet!” Jesus replied, “Unless I wash you, you won’t belong to me.”

Jesus kneels. That alone should make us pump the brakes. Jesus, the Lord of glory wraps a towel around His waist and begins washing dusty, stank, dirt-stained, tired feet. This wasn’t a small act of kindness, was a complete table turn. The One who deserves to be served chooses to serve. He touches what is dirty, overlooked, and ordinary. So, by doing this, He shows us what love really looks like: not loud, not selfish, but humble and costly.

Peter’s reaction is human, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?” In other words, I aint feeling this, this doesn't feel right. Peter is uncomfortable with a Savior who gets that close, that low. Crazy thing is, we often move the same way today. We don’t mind Jesus teaching us, correcting us, even saving us, but letting Him see our mess, flaws, insecurities, problem areas, our weakness, our need? No because that's the hard part because it exposes us before Him. We resist grace when it comes wrapped in humility.

Now let's look at Jesus' response.“You don’t understand now what I am doing, but someday you will.” There are moments when God’s ways don’t make sense to us. Obedience can feel confusing. Humility can feel unnecessary. Truth is, we don't always need to understand, but we need and are required to operate by faith. The real ones know that faith doesn’t always come with clarity, it comes with surrender.

Now check out the hardest line in these verses: “Unless I wash you, you won’t belong to me.” Jesus makes it clear, this is not optional. We cannot follow Him while refusing His cleansing. We cannot cling to pride and still walk with Christ. Before we are ever called to serve like Him, we must first allow Him to serve in His humility by washing us 🚿 , cleansing us 🧼 , forgiving us, meeting us in our brokenness 💔 .

Now that's DEEP 🌊 !

    Being humble is not easy, we feel like we should be doing. Lord thank you for teaching me what it means to be a part of you.

    This made me think of Matthew 5:3. Being poor in spirit and Col 3:12 humbleness of mind. What a mighty GOD we serve!
